Following the emotionally charged debut single Tired, Aäron Koch returns with This House (That I’ve Built) — a quietly devastating reflection on the aftermath of a breakup. But not just the emotional fallout: this is a song about dividing the possessions. About claiming what’s “yours” — not just hearts, but houses, wine, and the cat.
This House (That I’ve Built) speaks to the strange, transactional end of love — where shared lives are dismantled room by room. “It’s about a breakup where we didn’t just separate our lives, but also our belongings,” Koch explains. “There’s this emotional urge to reclaim things you feel more entitled to than the other person. Even when those things seem trivial, they carry deep meaning.”
In This House (That I’ve Built), Koch sings of the symbolic weight behind everyday things: the home he once created, now a contested space; the wine they once shared, now a reminder of separation; even the cat, caught in the emotional crossfire.
“This house that I’ve built, I want you to find your own,” he urges — a bittersweet gesture of letting go. And with a quiet sting: “Also the wine and the cat, I want you to find your own.” With these deceptively simple lines, he taps into something deeply relatable: the way ordinary objects become symbols of identity, loss, and quiet resistance.
Aäron Koch (Antwerp, ’94) has long been a familiar face in Belgium’s music scene through his work with Calicos. Now stepping into the spotlight under his own name, he crafts alternative pop songs rooted in indie rock and Americana — drawing comparisons to acts like The Veils, My Morning Jacket, and Strand of Oaks. His voice is as raw as it is tender, his lyrics achingly sincere.
Koch writes autobiographically, even if it took him a while to realize it. “My music is about weakness and vulnerability,” he says. “I had to learn how to write songs from scratch — I thought they’d sound like Queens of the Stone Age, but they turned out much more intimate than expected.”
Backed by an outstanding band (Evert Vanheertum, Quinten Vermaelen, Simen Wouters, and Simon Raman), Koch’s songs are urgent and timeless. In 2024, he became a finalist at Humo’s Rock Rally and opened for Belle & Sebastian in a sold-out Ancienne Belgique. His debut album is due later this year on Unday Records.
With This House (That I’ve Built), Aäron Koch confirms what Tired already suggested: this is a new voice worth hearing — and remembering.
